One of Life’s Sweetest Things…A Mother

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Unconditional.  Encouraging.  Supportive.

Thinks of others before herself.

Listens…no matter how late it is…no matter how tired she may be.

Helps you laugh when all you want to do is cry.

Lets you cry.

Makes you laugh!

Misses you.

Delivers a little piece of HOME to you.

By filling your mailbox with the sweetest treats.

Baked with LOVE.

Does it get any better than this?  I think not!!  Last year a box full of these sweet treats arrived at my front door.  I can remember wondering…"Do I really need to share them…is it really necessary…is it required??".  Don't worry…I shared them!  Yes, John and I (and, even Tucker got a few little crumbs) enjoyed these goodies more than you know.  Then, one day I went to open the container, and crumbs were all that remained.  Well, this year, I must admit, I was thinking about those cookies…those heart shaped little bits of goodness.  YuMMy!!!  So, one day my mother spilled the beans…oh, yes, it was true…we were going to be "treated" again!  Yea!!  I told her to please be sure she hid ours before the "monsters" that live close by dropped by and devoured them.  (Sorry, Sista Gal…but, you know it's true…teeheehee)

I can remember my mama pulling up a chair next to her at the kitchen counter when I was a little girl…it was time to bake SUGAR COOKIES!!  She still uses the cloth that she would put down (and, I still don't have one of those…not that I bake that often…but, I'm just sayin' ), and then she would sprinkle it with flour.  I really don't know if sugar cookies will turn out the same without this traditional cloth she uses.  :)  Then, it would be time to dig out our favorite cookie cutters.  Of course, for Valentine's Day it would be all of our favorite heart shapes.  And, we had lots of  'em!  She would roll out the dough, and I had a little rolling pin.  She would let me use the "big one", and of course, I was way more interested in using those cute cutters.  Soon enough I was cutting and then placing my little treasures on a cookie sheet.  She would remind me to use all the remaining spaces in the dough…use the tiny heart shapes…then, get all the dough together and roll again.  And, yes, you've got to have SPRINKLES!!!  However, my nephew, used to call that "dirt on the cookies" and wouldn't dare eat those.  Now, he eats them all!!  Just don't eat mine, Dillon!! 🙂

Although making cookies with my mother is one of my favorite memories, I do love to open up a surprise from her and find these sweet treats inside.  I can just imagine that although they are time-consuming to make, she enjoyed doing it because she knew they would brighten my day (And, the others that received them, too…she made lots of cookies!!).

She's just like that…

SWEET

Thoughtful

And, well loved!

She's one of my favorite VALENTINES!!

I love you, mama…thank you so much for taking time to bake these sweet treats for us!!

**Good thing they arrived on the day John arrived home from a business trip…not that I would have eaten them all before he got home, but…. 🙂
